Toe the Line: Penn Democrats | Gun control debate

(10/19/15 4:12am)

Two weeks ago today, the Penn community woke up fearing that the day might bring horror into our lives. On Oct. 2, an anonymous Internet source had alleged that there would be an attack on a Philadelphia-area college on the following Monday at 2 p.m. Penn students were understandably panicked, genuinely fearing for their safety. Thankfully, 2 p.m. passed quietly.

Toe the Line: Penn Democrats | Immigration reform

(10/05/15 5:53am)

As the 2016 presidential campaign has progressed, it has become clear the issue of immigration represents one of the fundamental differences between the Democratic and Republican parties. Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have pledged to work toward comprehensive immigration reform as president and routinely acknowledge our country’s history as a nation of immigrants. They celebrate our culture’s diversity and respect the unique contributions of Americans from all backgrounds who make America better. On the Republican side, however, the presidential contenders have launched one diatribe after another to disrespect and dehumanize immigrants.

Toe the Line: Penn Democrats | Syrian refugee crisis

(09/25/15 9:31pm)

This past Sunday, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry announced that the United States will accept up to 100,000 refugees per year by 2017 — above the current yearly cap of 70,000 — in order to assist with the migrant crisis that has grown out of the war-torn Middle East, especially from Syria. This is a positive development, but it is not nearly enough to fulfill the obligation that the U.S. has to provide a safe-haven for those fleeing violence, persecution and abominable living conditions. The United States government should welcome any person seeking refuge, provided they do not pose a threat to our national security or to the public safety.

Toe the Line: Penn Democrats | Increasing the minimum

(04/02/15 3:13am)

In Economics 001 with Rebecca Stein, Penn students learn that a government-imposed minimum wage distorts the market equilibrium and creates unemployment. However, as Professor Stein would likely admit, her lesson on the minimum wage falls short of reality. In practice, a reasonable minimum wage benefits low-income employees more than it harms the labor market. While President Obama’s proposal to increase the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 languishes in the Republican-controlled Congress, Penn Democrats applauds Governor Tom Wolf’s effort to increase Pennsylvania’s minimum wage. We encourage Congress to make a living wage possible for every American.
