The popular software allows anyone with a computer to enhance digital images with relative ease. This Thanksgiving season, I ate myself into food euphoria, and it was glorious. My turkey and brussels sprouts, however, came with a side of reality. The unwanted dish sat among the feast like the watery spinach no one really wanted to eat but couldn’t avoid (you would hate to offend the chef, and spinach is good for you).

I have been riveted by the Penn State sexual abuse scandal since riots broke out on the university’s State College campus last week. My interest has been part that of a college-news junky and part that of a voyeur who can’t keep her eyes off a train wreck. But for a while, I viewed the events as tragic and other — not concerned with my life beyond Facebook newsfeed updates from my few acquaintances that attend the school.

When I began writing for The Daily Pennsylvanian in fall 2008, the worst thing you could have told me was that my story would be running online only. Editors tried to sell the placement as no big deal, but there was something thrilling about seeing the words “By Samantha Sharf” on dusty gray newsprint and getting ink on my hands. I was sure this feeling could not be replicated in front of a computer screen.
