'Marathon' to benefit
Delaware Valley college students will have a chance to party for a good cause in November when a local charity holds a 24-hour dance marathon to benefit area handicapped children. Variety Club will hold its first annual Dance Marathon on November 9 and 10 at the Philadelphia Civic Center. The goal of the marathon, which is being hosted by Q-102 radio, is to raise money for the organization's summer camp and other programs. Students from over 10 area colleges and universities are expected to participate in the 24-hour marathon, according to Cindy Conte, a Variety Club staffer. When they register, entrants pay $100, which they may make up by getting sponsors. Each entrant must dance for the full 24 hours of the marathon. The University's chapter of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity is responsible for publicizing the event on campus. Fraternity members plan to hang posters around campus and at PiKA parties and set up sign-up booths around campus, according to PiKA member Mike Misanski. Variety Club will award prizes to the school which raises the most money, and every entrant will be eligible to win L.A. Gear sneakers and a trip for two to the Bahamas. But Misanski said that since the dance marathon coincides with the University's Parent's Weekend, he does not expect many students from this campus to participate. Among the other schools involved with the marathon are Drexel, Temple and LaSalle universities, the University of Delaware and Widener College. To participate, students must send an entry form and $100 to Variety Club, Warwick Hotel, 17th and Locust streets, Philadelphia, PA 19104. Entry forms will be available at designated booths and at the Book Store. The deadline for entries is October 15.
