Budget cuts and safety concerns in the West Philadelphia school system spell disaster for low-income students and families. Schools reopening for the fall semester is a central concern amid accelerating COVID-19 infections. The Trump administration is urging schools to reopen, and threatening to withhold funding from districts that do not resume in-person classes. Considering that for years, Philadelphia schools have been unable to adequately clean classrooms, the idea that they can protect students from COVID-19 seems naive.

In Philadelphia, police reported that a Temple student suffered a serious head injury after being assaulted by an officer. In Buffalo, official accounts claimed that a 75-year-old protestor tripped and fell. The report of George Floyd’s death  omitted crucial information leading up to his death. In the fight against systemic racism and police brutality, false reports emerged as a central issue. Though the problem of false police reports has existed for decades, viral cell phone footage highlights their frequency and devastating impact.

The murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has spurred protests against systemic racism across 140 cities worldwide. The Black Lives Matter movement calls for police reform and seeks to combat violence against Black communities. As powerful displays of anger and heartbreak overwhelm news outlets and social media feeds, addressing police misconduct is paramount. However, amid peaceful demonstrations, riots and looting have put small businesses at risk.

The vast majority of states have turned to a mail-in ballot system to protect both poll workers and voters. However, legislation regarding mail-in ballots varies widely state-by-state, and Pennsylvania faces a unique set of challenges in developing an adequate mail-in system as the November presidential election rapidly approaches.
