Leading up to the 2016 presidential election season, Chelsea Clinton announced that she was expecting her first child, changing the nature of the upcoming election season. The question being asked was whether Hillary Clinton would still be able to run for president despite her responsibilities as a grandparent. Clearly, sexism is an issue that prevails in American politics. But change won’t come about until we critically evaluate our biases and those of society.

With the presidential election season gearing up, it is abundantly clear that immigration will continue to dominate the campaign trails. President Trump will continue to use immigration to stoke fears of criminals coming to the United States en masse, whereas Democrats will invoke America’s history as a nation of immigrants to tout the benefits of diversity.

Hatred toward women, hostility toward a certain religion, and prejudice toward people of a different race rank among the most obvious sentiments we know not to express — no matter how much we may or may not feel that way. Oh, and let’s not forget, “I am a nationalist.” Surely, no adult in their right mind would be reckless enough to say that out loud … right?

In September, the United States economy added approximately 134,000 jobs, dropping the unemployment rate to 3.7 percent. And, as would be expected, Donald Trump has been quick to take credit. If you were to listen only to President Trump, you would think that this positive economic trend is due primarily to his administration’s policies. This is false.

As wages stagnate, more and more people are struggling to make ends meet. They are parents, siblings, and friends, and they are living lives increasingly characterized by discontent and fear — fear over whether they can provide their children with food and a future to look forward to.
