As a recent grad, I’ve come to terms with the fact that Penn will never again be quite the same place; it’s a given that our dear old Penn is in need of constant rebuild and repair (she is pushing 270 years, after all). Slightly out of her element, Nursing freshman Kerry McLaughlin sits at the photo lab front desk in the basement of the Charles Addams Fine Arts Hall, scanning photo and video equipment for fellow students. And although she is just a few weeks into her new position, McLaughlin jokes freely with the art students and graduate assistants who pass her as she mans the lab.

By many accounts, the commitment of Penn students to Teach for America - a nonprofit that recruits college graduates for two years of teaching in low-income communities - is impressive. The number of students who join each year puts the University among the top 10 large schools participating in the program. And last year alone, Teach for America was the largest recruiter of graduates on campus, employing 37 Penn seniors.
