Lexi Boccuzzi | Do you love democracy? Then stop strategizing on Election Day.

(11/09/23 8:35pm)

Unlike much of The Daily Pennsylvanian’s readership, I did not find the title of the recent column “Do you love democracy? Then vote Republican.” very provocative. As many people know, I am the proud president of Penn’s College Republicans chapter. I do love democracy and often vote Republican!

Lexi Boccuzzi | Antisemitism shrouded in activism?

(10/20/23 3:35am)

Last week, there was a solemn vigil hosted by Penn Hillel in memory of the civilians kidnapped and murdered by Hamas terrorists on Oct. 7. Feeling the strength, compassion, and unity among Penn’s Jewish community was truly something to behold. It was powerful to listen to the testimony of campus activists, who told stories of family and friends in Israel, and to hear my peers sing the Israeli national anthem in Hebrew.

Lexi Boccuzzi | Barbie and … the birth rate?

(09/21/23 5:12pm)

It was virtually impossible to avoid the hyper-feminine content that dominated the internet and media writ-large this summer. From the blockbuster debut of “Barbie” to Taylor Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour, anti-patriarchal narratives seemed to be everywhere that you turned. Whether it be the famous “f**k the patriarchy” lyric shouted during Taylor Swift’s All Too Well (10 Minute Version) or Barbie’s Ken-free Dreamhouse, this media seems to be selling young women a dose of female empowerment that rivals Betty Friedan’s greatest works.

Lexi Boccuzzi | Abandoning the dean’s list is a move towards devaluing merit at Penn

(04/06/23 12:05am)

We’ve all seen it in our lives, from handing out participation trophies to children at sports games to the refusal to disclose admissions information at elite colleges like Penn, efforts are being taken at virtually every level to decrease competition in academic and athletic spaces. While increased collaboration, support, and camaraderie are, of course, beneficial, doing so at the expense of recognizing merit is harmful and problematic in the long term.

Lexi Boccuzzi | Redefining the “silent majority”

(03/02/23 1:18pm)

Living in Washington this semester, I have largely been struck by the bipartisanship I have witnessed. Many adults in the “industry” have friends across the aisle, and while they certainly don’t let that keep them from being ideological, they assume that the vast majority of their opposition is working in good faith. That said, when a Democratic government official that came and spoke to my class last week asked, “Have you ever been made to feel like you need to apologize for your views … because of your age or gender?” I answered with a disheartened yes.

Lexi Boccuzzi | Home is where the vote is

(10/30/22 2:31pm)

If you’ve walked through campus anytime in the last month, you have been questioned by eager volunteers with clipboards asking if you’re registered to vote. These students are aimed at registering members of the Penn community to vote in Pennsylvania. In a recent Daily Pennsylvanian article about voter registration, Penn Dems boasted the 625 people they have registered ahead of the upcoming election.

Lexi Boccuzzi | Protesting with a purpose: Analyzing the UC Townhomes movement

(09/15/22 11:39pm)

Protests are undoubtedly an extra-legal characteristic of our democracy and Anglo American political tradition. Mobs were used as means of civic engagement in England and later colonial America, and were often considered a routine, if not always approved and appreciated, way for people to voice their grievances. Nevertheless, it would be ignorant and untruthful to say that all protests are created equal in their intention, delivery, and impact.

Lexi Boccuzzi | Wear your politics proudly at Penn

(08/23/22 2:20am)

When I committed to Penn, I was enthusiastic at the intellectual possibilities at my fingertips. I kept repeating that Penn was “like an all-you-can-eat buffet of knowledge that I couldn’t wait to indulge in.” However, as someone committed to her opinions and planning to pursue a major in philosophy, politics, and economics, this excitement was met with a slew of warnings from my friends and family.

Lexi Boccuzzi | What happened to 'follow the science'?

(04/01/22 2:46am)

If you read the latest six-line University Notification email in your inbox and were confused, upset, or frustrated, you are not alone. In a poll conducted in the Penn Class of 2024 GroupMe Thursday after the email was sent, 400 out of 543 student respondents said that they did not believe we should have a mask mandate. However, the fact that this is the only empirical indication we have of opinions on the mandate among the student body is indicative of Penn’s undemocratic decision-making process throughout the duration of this pandemic.
