The Texas women blazed to the college 4x100-meter relay title in 43 seconds flat, the third fastest time ever run at the Penn Relays. The Longhorns edged defending champ South Carolina, meaning the Gamecocks will not be able to defend their record four relays titles from a year ago. South Carolina finished third, six tenths off the pace.

If you read Wednesday's DP (and of course you did, right?), you saw the letters to the editor from third grade students at the Penn Alexander School. While I was quite impressed by their writing skills, the school's track team didn't do so well in its 4x100 relay just now. It finished last in its heat with a time of 56.51 seconds, almost six seconds behind heat winners H.R. Edmunds.

Penn was not the only college sports program with a coaching search this year.

I got an email Tuesday night from Jeff Orleans, executive director of the Ivy League, wanting to talk about my column from Tuesday about the Ivy League baseball schedule.

DALLAS -- Wow. It's our last full day in Dallas and we couldn't leave without having a little bit of an adventure.

I hate to say it, but I think Penn has fallen to a 15 seed. They are only ahead eight other conference leaders/winners in the RPI. That means that the Quakers will have to jump ahead of two other teams in the eyes of the selection committee if they hope to get a 14 seed. The only team even close to Penn in the RPI, however, is Pacific (they're 98th). Still, Pacific has a better tournament resume than Penn with a better quality win (Texas A&M) and fewer bad losses.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- There are cathedrals of basketball, such as the Palestra, and then there are cathedrals where basketball is played, such as Yale's John J. Lee Amphitheater. The Penn men's basketball team finds itself at the latter venue this evening, and The Buzz is here to bring you all the action in this big Ivy League showdown.

Jay Wright of Villanova gets most of the credit nationally for playing a four-guard offense. After this weekend, it would appear as though Fran Dunphy wanted to show everyone 'Nova is not the only team in the city that can make do with just one big man.

Tonight at the Palestra was fairly uneventful -- I guess that's a good thing.

The last two years I have been to Columbia to watch Penn, I've heard it referred to as 'Palestra junior' because of all the Quakers fans in the house. After seeing the crowd Saturday at Harvard, I propose christening Lavietes Pavilion 'Palestra North,' because it's just like a Penn home game. Mark Zoller thought so: "There certainly were a lot more Penn Quakers fans than Harvard Crimson fans."

I might be the only one left out there, but I'm still not sold on Princeton. Sure they're in second place in the league after pummeling Brown and Yale over the weekend, but Joe Scott's Tigers still have not proved they can win a tough game.

Last night, Penn fans serenaded Ibrahim Jaaber on his 22nd birthday, and his teammates rewarded him with a win.
