Ana West | Free speech is not under attack

(10/29/19 10:58pm)

Penn has had a considerable amount of controversy in the last few weeks surrounding regressive statements from prominent voices. The idea of firing Penn Law professor and “cultural-distance nationalist” Amy Wax has picked up steam. A demonstration by student protesters led to Perry World House canceling a talk with Thomas Homan, a former director of ICE, who has been charged with ramping up “terror tactics” used against undocumented immigrants, such as family separation. The hiring of Jonathan Anomaly as associate director of the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics department has been questioned in light of a paper he authored last year defending eugenics.

Ana West | Know your rights as an off-campus tenant

(10/14/19 1:44am)

Trying to find a place to live near Penn can feel like a no-win situation. On-campus housing is a pricey option for many students on and off financial aid, but all of us have heard the horror stories about off-campus units. As a student looking for housing, especially in West Philadelphia, it is easy to feel like you have to take what you can get: pest problems, broken equipment, unresponsive landlords, and even potentially hazardous conditions are accepted by many Penn students as an inevitable part of the housing process.

Ana West | Question your faith at Penn

(09/23/19 11:52pm)

I remember the first time that I doubted God’s existence. I was twelve, staring benignly down at a Bible, when it hit me that I wasn’t sure I believed any of what I was reading. I obsessed; I would push it out of my head, only to have doubts come back at the worst possible times. I felt guilty. I didn't tell anyone. And although this process started well before I came to Penn, college is where many people experience something similar for the first time.

Ana West | Penn needs to increase RA and GA compensation

(09/05/19 4:55am)

The student staff of the College Houses serve in one of the most visible and important support roles that exists on campus. When new students move in, residential advisors and graduate advisors are often the first authority figures they are introduced to at Penn, and for many students, these advisors remain one of the most accessible resources throughout the school year. Because these student staff positions are so important, the compensation for them should be fair, competitive, and adequate for interested students from a diverse array of economic backgrounds and financial situations.

Ana West | Penn must require sexual assault prevention workshops

(08/28/19 11:55pm)

The beginning of the year at Penn is a stressful time for many students, but it can feel especially daunting to new students. During New Student Orientation and the start of classes, freshmen and transfer students have a lot to worry about: making friends, going through the trying process of club recruitment, succeeding academically at a new school. For the youngest undergraduates in particular, this is a vulnerable time. The usual challenges of college life, as intimidating as they may seem, are normal, expected, and healthy: It can be good to go through them. Unfortunately — at any point in their time at Penn, and sometimes as early as their first weekend here — too many students will have to deal with the overwhelming and life–altering stress that comes with experiencing sexual assault.

Ana West | Undergraduate Assembly needs to deliver beyond election season

(04/05/19 12:48am)

Campaigns for Penn’s Undergraduate Assembly have been in full swing. If you’ve walked down Locust Walk recently, you’ve seen the countless posters and flyers, complete with professional photographs and cheeky slogans, of students from every school and class year vying for titles in the UA. Shortly, a new group of executives and representatives will take their seats, and after that the UA — and its members — will become a lot less visible on campus.

Ana West | Christians at Penn have a responsibility to stand by the LGBTQ community

(03/17/19 11:34pm)

The acceptance of LGBTQ people and identities is one of the biggest debates in many forms of organized religion in the world today. While the issue is widespread and not confined to any one group or country, the handling of LGBTQ issues by Christian churches in America is one of the most prominent and complicated examples. While more Americans support gay marriage than ever before, select Christians and churches have been some of the most vocal critics of LGBTQ rights.

Ana West | Loneliness at Penn is rampant, and it’s time to stop hiding it

(03/13/19 3:48am)

Penn students talk a lot about various aspects of our campus culture and the negative effects that accompany them. We all know how our pre-professional culture creates stress among students and negatively impacts our mental health; we frequently talk about flashy displays of wealth and the insular, out-of-touch environment that we have here, so much so that terms like “Penn bubble” or “SABSing“ have become shorthand and memes. But many negative parts of Penn are harder to talk about — and one of them is the fact that a lot of us feel lonely, and we aren’t sure what to do about it.

Ana West | It’s time for children of privilege to grow up — and that means Penn kids too

(02/08/19 11:14pm)

Here we go again. Last week, when a racist photograph from the personal yearbook page of Virginia Governor Ralph Northam came to light, our country once again started a national conversation about the scandalous and reprehensible behavior of a major government official. In recent days, Northam has been called upon by prominent Democrats and Republicans alike to resign from his position (as he should), but, predictably, people in his camp and others across the country have already rushed to his defense, raising questions about whether or not his career should end. He was a young man, the story goes. He did a dumb thing. We should judge him on his conduct now — his past is irrelevant.

Ana West | Don't ignore the dangers of relationship violence at Penn

(01/28/19 1:06am)

Despite the prevalence of hookup culture or because of it, many of us — secretly or not so secretly — idealize college romance. While times and conventions have changed, and fewer of us attend school for “MRS degrees,” a significant number of people still meet their spouses in college, and even more hope to. Before I started college, not only was I told that hookups can be messy, and that you run the risk of falling in love and getting hurt, but I also picked up, somewhere along the way, that hooking up — for women, as the conventional wisdom goes — can be dangerous. As toxic as rhetoric about drinking, going out, or having casual sex being pathways to assault is, our culture puts out the message that hooking up is perilous.

Ana West | Gendered organizations are a problem — even outside of Greek life

(01/17/19 2:16am)

The rush process for Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic organizations is beginning, and the chance to earn coveted spots in these sororities and fraternities is dominating the conversations of hundreds of underclassmen. Outside of the Greek scene, many popular performing arts groups restrict membership to performers with a certain gender identity. Gendered groups abound at Penn, and while it’s rare for anyone to take issue with that fact, maybe more of us should.
