Allison Santa-Cruz | Our academic freedom is at stake

(12/06/23 1:57am)

Free speech and academic freedom are at the core of a healthy university and, more broadly, a healthy democracy. It is increasingly apparent that one of the greatest perils of today is these rights, coupled with strong demand for political engagement, being curtailed by various forces. We have most recently seen this phenomenon with the demands that Liz Magill resign over her delayed and inadequate response to Hamas’ terrorist attacks on Israel and antisemitism on campus.

Allison Santa-Cruz | Social media is no place for real political discourse

(10/19/23 2:52am)

The recent conflict in Israel and Palestine has been one of enormous tragedy and loss for not only the innocent civilians in those areas but many around the world who have friends and family there. And, as has become the norm with fraught political issues of our time, social media has become the chief forum that hosts discourse about the subject. I’ve heard from Jewish friends who have spent time in Israel that some members of the Israel Defense Forces have asked those abroad to spread awareness online of the realities of the Hamas attacks.

Allison Santa-Cruz | The vicious underbelly of the Women’s World Cup

(09/16/23 12:12am)

Having played soccer almost my entire life, the Women’s World Cup has always represented much more to me and many other young women than just a quadrennial tournament. Since 1991, it has showcased the best female talent of disparate nations and given them the equal opportunity to play the beautiful game on a global stage. Beyond the geopolitical significance of the tournament, it signifies the novel possibility that women can excel in sports, and that they can be taken seriously on a global stage.

Allison Santa-Cruz | Digital schoolwork is ruining our work-life balance

(04/13/23 4:24pm)

Teaching and higher education are now completely reliant on students’ use of technology. It’s a rare occurrence that material is shared with students in physical form, and sites such as Canvas and Google Classroom have become educational staples. There are many benefits to this model of higher education: it’s much easier to only keep track of a computer for all classes, rather than having a binder full of papers across many different classes. It provides streamlining abilities to students that are unparalleled and substantially cuts prices associated with purchasing physical organization tools and materials.

Allison Santa-Cruz | Creating yourself in the new year

(02/01/23 12:58am)

Some people believe that New Year’s resolutions are trite, often useless attempts at lofty goals. Roughly 80 percent of people fail to keep their resolutions intact. Despite this discouraging statistic, I still believe that resolutions have value in aiding us in something even bigger and more important than achieving our tangible goals.

Allison Santa-Cruz | Penn is neglecting mental health yet again

(10/16/22 11:00pm)

It was only through conversation that I learned that Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) as an independent entity no longer exists; it has recently merged with Student Health Services and been renamed Student Health and Counseling. Student Health and Counseling now describes itself as the “primary care and psychological care division of Wellness at Penn,” encapsulating both physical and mental wellness.

Allison Santa-Cruz | Plagiarism undermines the purpose of higher education but is caused by the pressures of it

(06/14/22 4:10am)

Two students admitted to Penn – rising College sophomore Annabelle Choi and her sister, incoming College first year Madeline Choi – have recently been accused of plagiarism in a Change.org petition. The petition was organized by "For Justice in College Applications" and has now received 5,845 signatures. The petition claims that the siblings “have published, plagiarized, and fabricated research papers with their peers over the years, writing on topics as far-ranging as communications, neuroscience, psychology, dental science, and criminal justice.” Both siblings were admitted to Penn’s seven-year bio-dental program.

Allison Santa-Cruz | It's time to drop the mask mandate, required testing, and PennOpen pass

(03/14/22 10:57pm)

It would be an understatement to say that living with COVID-19 has been both arduous and precarious, as it has seemingly become our new normal. However, the time has come to begin transitioning to life as we knew it prior to COVID-19. Penn should no longer have the mask mandate in indoor spaces, obligatory testing, or require PennOpen Pass.

Allison Santa-Cruz | Stop comparing Philadelphia to other cities

(03/02/22 3:06am)

Before coming to Penn, I was beyond excited to finally live in a truly cosmopolitan and metropolitan city, in spite of a slew of comments from people that Philadelphia is a gritty and rough city. I largely ignored these comments, but after a short time here, I quickly realized that many students feel similarly. A lot of people remark that Philadelphia's no New York or Boston. I only got here last August, yet I completely agree. Of course, this city is no New York or Boston. It's uniquely Philadelphia.

Allison Santa-Cruz | The case for deleting social media

(11/23/21 2:51pm)

Sometimes, I catch myself doing it — my least favorite repertoire. I open up my phone and scroll through Snapchat, Instagram, or whatever social media platform fancies me at that moment to avoid the awkwardness of a social situation, to appear busy, to fill my boredom, or to procrastinate completing important tasks, such as homework, laundry, or exercise.

Allison Santa-Cruz | Penn housing needs serious reform

(10/11/21 8:19pm)

Before coming to Penn to start the school year, I had only been on campus twice for very short periods of time. My geographical knowledge consisted solely of the Button, the Dueling Tampons, and the infamous Quad. Thus, when my roommate and I opened our housing results over the summer, we thought we had encountered a mistake. We both frantically texted each other, wondering what even is Kings Court English College House?

Allison Santa-Cruz | We need to rethink the function of modern fraternities

(09/30/21 4:24am)

Assaults that occur in college fraternities, though ubiquitous, are often overlooked. The assault that allegedly occurred at the Psi Upsilon chapter house, also known as Castle, on Sept. 4 is no exception. Not only does this concerning allegation raise pressing questions about race, campus safety, and University communication, but it also highlights the broader implications of assaults on campuses across the country that preceded it. There have been outcries and protests, but nothing seems to shift permanently. The cyclic existence of parties with fights, sexual assaults, alcohol poisoning, and even death seems as if it may never end. How do we end this cycle? Do we even have the agency to do so?
