Penn’s decision last week to host a partially in-person commencement on May 17 was received by many graduating seniors with appreciation and celebration. But for many Orthodox Jewish students, the decision also produced anxiety and uncertainty around the date of commencement, which is scheduled on the same day as the Jewish holiday Shavuot.

When Director of Penn Libraries Constantia Constantinou first came to Penn in May 2018, one of the first rooms she visited was the Moelis Family Grand Reading Room in Van Pelt Library. As she walked into the room, she was immediately struck by the large windows facing the trees on Locust Walk, the tapestry, and the ottomans.

As spring semester came to a close, Vice Provost for University Life Valarie Swain-Cade McCoullum had several new positions to fill. Just a few weeks earlier, the new position of chief operating officer of wellness had been announced, and over the summer, the position of associate vice provost for student affairs had also been vacated. McCoullum found herself helping cover for both positions, while handling all her other roles at VPUL. 





Penn's Dean of Admissions comments on UChicago’s decision to drop SAT/ACT requirement

On Thursday morning, the University of Chicago announced that it would no longer require undergraduate applicants to submit an SAT or ACT score in order to be considered for admission. However, according to Dean of Admissions Eric Furda, Penn will maintain its current testing requirement and will not follow up with a similar move anytime soon.

On Jun. 4 President Donald Trump disinvited the Philadelphia Eagles from visiting the White House for a Super Bowl victory celebration. The abrupt White House announcement came after nearly the entire team said they intended to boycott the celebration that was scheduled to take place the next day.


Meek Mill's judge will remain on case, despite request for her removal

A request filed by rapper Meek Mill's legal team to remove Philadelphia Common Pleas Court Judge Genece E. Brinkley from his role overseeing the criminal case against Mill was denied by another Philadelphia judge on Wednesday morning. Conquequently, Brinkley, who sent Mill to prison last year and who repeatedly denied Mill the opportunity to be released from prison on bail, will remain on the case, according to Philly.com.




Penn names Dean from Stony Brook U. Constantia Constantinou as new Vice Provost of Libraries

Penn will appoint Constantia Constantinou, the current Dean of University Libraries at Stony Brook University, as the new H. Carton Rogers III Vice Provost and Director of the Penn Libraries. In an email to administrators, Provost Wendell Pritchett said that Constantinou will begin her job on August 1.
