Club election season is looming. For many, this means the chance to serve on an executive board for a reputable club, adding to an extensive resume and elongating one’s list of prospective employers. Some students strain themselves and mentally invest their all. For those involved, it’s a time of stress, pressure and, sometimes, disappointment.

Descending from the bridge on Locust Walk one cloudy morning, I saw the familiar sea of students hurriedly milling between classes. On my peers’ faces were expressions of stress. The rush of Monday morning classes was juxtaposed sharply with the chill, feel-good vibes flowing out of my earphones.

I’ve learned about the life of a star in my "Survey of the Universe" class. I’ve talked about social justice in Spanish with my professor. I’ve even analyzed my own DNA in a biology freshman seminar. One of the reasons that I flew 9,000 miles to the opposite hemisphere to attend university was that I wanted to be able to take classes about everything. But by the time I finished freshman year, I realized Penn had gone overboard with the quantity of general education requirements, sacrificing the quality of the major in the process.

I recently thought back on my time working in retail, for a large company with three decades of history. Within my role, I had many opportunities to witness the degree to which the business cared for the environment, through small- and large-scale practices.
Frankly, I was shocked. Before being displayed on the shop floor, new stock was individually wrapped in multiple layers of plastic. I was supposed to rip them off before the customer ever saw them, and dispose of them in a landfill far far away from where anyone in the shop could see — maybe even the Pacific Ocean.
