Q&A with newly-named Lambda Chair Sean Collins

College junior Sean Collins, studying mathematics, was named Chair of the Lambda Alliance, the LGBTQ-umbrella organization, for 2017. Collins, a former track & field athlete and head of Penn Athletes and Allies Tackling Homophobia, has been a part of Lambda since his freshman year. Collins sat down with The Daily Pennsylvanian to answer a few questions about his involvement in Lambda and plans for next year.

Penn’s administration is no stranger to protests. Just last week, students from Fossil Free Penn staged a sit-in outside Penn President Amy Gutmann’s office to urge transparency in its reasons for declining to divest from fossil fuels. But student protests criticizing the administration are not necessarily the most effective, according to Graduate School of Education professor Jonathan Zimmerman.

The only public event celebrating Diwali is hosted by two Penn student groups

With Diwali taking place this year on Saturday, Oct. 30, Penn students are planning a weeklong series of events in advance of the holiday. Two Penn student organizations, Penn Hindu and Jain Association and its graduate school counterpart, Penn Rangoli, are collaborating to host the only Diwali event in Philadelphia that is open to the public.





Penn holds third Penn Spectrum Weekend to discuss cultural identity

On Sept. 25, the University’s third Penn Spectrum Weekend came to an end. Among this event’s three appearances on campus — the first two occurring in 2010 and 2013, respectively — this year’s was by far the best-attended. Though final attendance numbers are not yet confirmed, over 800 people registered. This group was made up of roughly half students and half alumni, with faculty and staff peppered in.



Penn Program on DCC announces theme year on sex, gender and race

The Penn Program on Democracy, Citizenship and Constitutionalism has announced its 2016-17 theme year, “Citizenship on the Edge: Sex/Gender/Race.” In partnership with the Alice Paul Center for Research on Women, Gender and Sexuality, the DCC — which provides grants and fellowships in this area of research — will examine the struggle of those who have a precarious hold on citizenship due to their gender, sexual and racial positioning.
