Pure speed

There's really only one event for which the winner can claim the title 'fastest man in the world.' That's the 100-meter dash.

Today relays attendees got a real treat in seeing Asafa Powell, the reigning fastest man. Did they even need to run the race? They did, and Powell blew away the competition in 10.10 seconds, just one hundredth off Carl Lewis' 1983 Relays record. So if you blinked, you probably missed it.

Powell was a good seven meters ahead of anyone else at the finish line. That might not seem like a lot in most races, but in this one where the whole thing is over in 10 seconds, that's an eternity.

Just for comparison, Austin Leary, 76, won the men's masters (75-plus) in 17.36. That's still pretty fast.
