Beat a rival, get a nice NCAA-style reward.
After losing to Princeton earlier in the season, No. 15 Penn took down the No. 16 Tigers in dominating fashion to defend their Ivy League Tournament championship by a score of 9-6. The Red and Blue clinched a spot in the NCAA Tournament with the win and will face Canisius in the first round.
The matchup with Canisius will take place at Maryland on Friday, with the winner facing No. 1 seeded Maryland two days later.
The Quakers (12-4, 8-1 Ivy) got off to a quick start vs. Princeton, jumping ahead to an early 6-0 lead through the first 20 minutes of the game. Sophomore midfield Nina Corcoran got the scoring started just two and a half minutes in and put Penn ahead by six with her second goal of the game.
Princeton (11-6, 7-2) wasn’t finished though, as the Tigers would score two goals to cap off the half and go into the break down by four, 6-2.
Early in the second half, the Quakers refused to relent, extending their lead to five with a goal from sophomore Iris Williamson. The Tigers would attempt a rally but ultimately fall short, despite ending the game on a 3-1 run.
The Quakers worked to get everyone involved on the offensive end and get plenty of opportunities to score. Four Quakers tied for the team lead with two goals each and the team as a whole managed to attempt 24 shots to Princeton’s 12, including a 21-3 advantage at the break.
Penn also capitalized on sloppy play from the Tigers, who committed 19 fouls and had 11 turnovers
The Quakers also defeated Harvard on Saturday to secure a spot in the final against Princeton in a thrilling 10-9 double overtime victory. Senior midfield Tory Bensen scored the winning goal to boost the Quakers.
The tournament championship secured a spot in the NCAA tournament for the Quakers, who will look to improve upon their performance last season, where they were eliminated by Virginia in the first round.
