Off the strength of a strong singles performance, sophomore Sol Eskenazi, along with freshman doubles partner Sonya Latycheva, captured the ITA Northeast Regional Doubles Championship in West Point, N.Y., on Tuesday.
The duo won six straight matches en route to the title, beating four Ivy teams, including top-seeded Princeton.
It was against the final Columbia team and No. 2 seeds Bianca Sanon and Tiana Takenaga that the Quakers claimed the championship, winning 8-6 in an eight-game pro set.
The victory earned Eskenazi and Latycheva the opportunity to compete as one of 20 teams in the Indoor Championships, Nov. 8-11.
In the singles draw, sophomore Alex Ion was eliminated in the first round.
Eskenazi received a first-round bye and won her next two matches in three sets before eventually falling to the No. 2 seed, Yale’s Elizabeth Epstein in three sets, 6-3, 2-6 and 6-2.
But it may have been a blessing in disguise, leaving Eskenazi to focus on the doubles draw where she would get a little payback, dropping Epstein and her partner Hanna Yu, 8-6.
