With back-to-back matches slated for tomorrow, the Penn women’s squash team is in a prime position to extend its win streak to nine.
Following a month-long hiatus, the No. 3 Quakers returned to action last Saturday in California where they swept No. 6 Stanford along with Wesleyan and Connecticut College.
And it will be back to the buses tomorrow when they travel to Massachusetts to face both Williams and Amherst.
Thus far, Penn has easily defeated its opponents, winning by at least 7-2 in all of its matches. The team plans to handle its upcoming New England opponents with the same ease.
“We beat Williams 8-1 last year, and in ’08 we beat Amherst 9-0,” senior Christina Matthias said. “[Tomorrow] won’t be much different.”
However, with two games in one day, the Quakers might have a lot on their plate.
“During the break we did a lot of intense training by ourselves and worked on improving our individual games,” Matthias said. “I definitely think we’re prepared for the two games.”
After Penn’s 8-1 win against a No. 5 Yale team, coach Jack Wyant is also confident that his team can pull off the double header without trouble.
“The girls have definitely proven that they can do anything in this league,” he said following his team’s match against the Bulldogs.
The last time the Quakers had a double header was in 2008 against Williams and Amherst.
Penn had little trouble, winning both contests 8-1 and 9-0, respectively.
The Quakers will take on Williams in the first match of the double header at 11 a.m.
The Ephs (8-2) have started off the new year with two straight victories and have lost only two games all season to No. 1 Harvard and No. 2 Trinity.
“Their front line-up is much better this year, and they’re a lot more competitive,” Matthias said.
Meanwhile, Amherst (3-2) is coming off one of its most successful seasons during Tom Carmean’s four-year stint as head coach.
Yet, if history is any indication, the Quakers will not show signs of being tired and will play both games with the same intensity.
For her part, Matthias is confident in her teams ability to extend their streak.
“We will definitely win against Williams and Amherst,” the senior said.
