Police have identified and interviewed a man who allegedly raped a Penn freshman woman at an off-campus fraternity party early Sunday morning, according Vice President for Public Safety Maureen Rush.
The victim was not otherwise physically injured, Rush said. She declined to state whether the victim was taken to the hospital following the incident.
No arrests have been made, and the District Attorney’s office is reviewing the case. According to Rush, this review will likely be complete in about one to two weeks, when the DA’s office will decide whether arrests will be made and whether to go forward with prosecution.
Philadelphia Police spokeswoman Tanya Little said police initially responded to a report of sexual assault on the 4000 block of Walnut Street early Sunday.
Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs Director Scott Reikofski said police responded to an incident that same night at the Beta Theta Pi off-campus house on the 4000 block of Walnut Street, but he declined to comment on the nature of the incident.
Several students, who all wished to remain anonymous, said they attended a party at the Beta off-campus house Saturday night.
Police arrived at the party and ushered people into the house’s living room, students said, adding that Beta brothers were guarding all of the doors so that no one could leave for about 20 minutes.
Police said they were responding to a sexual assault, according to partygoers.
Beta president and Wharton junior Eric Morris declined to comment.
This is the third reported rape involving Penn students this semester and the second that took place at a fraternity party.
