How Penn is making small tweaks to improve the sustainability of older college houses

Penn's newest college houses, Hill College House and New College House, are frequently recognized for their environmentally friendly designs. Just last month, NCH was selected as one of six projects honored for sustainability. But Penn has also been working to improve environmentalism at older college houses, changes which students may not even have been aware of. 




Students think eating off campus costs less than it does on campus. Penn agrees.

Over 40 percent of Penn students live off campus, almost all of whom are upperclassmen. Many of these students eat off campus too, but for years Student Registration & Financial Services estimated the same cost of meals for students living on and off-campus. During the 2016-17 academic year, that estimate was $5,086. 


Hamilton Court renovation keeps some students from moving in until the first day of class

For many at Penn, move-in can take days. Students may have to register guests, transport heavy furniture and unpack a wardrobe large enough to last the entire school year. For some students living at Hamilton Court Apartments this semester, all these tasks will have to be done on Aug. 29 — the first day of classes.


Former Penn provost has ordered the removal of a Confederate leader's statue at Duke

Duke University President and former Penn Provost Vincent Price has taken a stand on the national debate over statues of Confederate leaders, ordering the removal of a statue commemorating Confederate General Robert E. Lee from one of Duke’s most iconic buildings. This came a week after violent protests erupted in Charlottesville, Va. over the planned removal of a statue of Lee from the University of Virginia's campus.
