Midway through Penn Athletics’ spring season, an intriguing combination of players have left an indelible mark on their respective teams’ successes in 2015. In recent weeks, Penn baseball has surged ahead, winning seven of eight Ivy games in dominating fashion, yet with no single person responsible for the hot streak. The women’s lacrosse and softball teams are humming along as well, with their usual cast of stars setting the tone for the Quakers.

Penn basketball has gotten off to an inauspicious start to the 2014-15 season, losing all five of its games. The Quakers are one of 14 winless teams left in the NCAA, having suffered some close defeats to Delaware State, Lafayette and Wagner. The Red and Blue also rank 278th out of 351 Division I teams in Ken Pomeroy’s College Basketball Rankings, but they are also not far behind fellow Ivy squads Cornell, Brown and Dartmouth.

With two straight victories under its belt, Penn women’s soccer will look to keep its momentum up on the road against a tough Princeton squad this Saturday. However, with the Tigers (7-5-3, 3-2-1 Ivy) gunning for an Ivy League title and preparing for Senior Day, the Red and Blue (7-5-3, 2-3-1) will undoubtedly have their hands full. This weekend, the AP came out with its first top 25 poll for the 2014-15 men's basketball season. For the first time since 1975, an Ivy League team made the preseason top 25, but it wasn't Penn this time: It was Harvard, led by high-profile coach Tommy Amaker. The Crimson were tied for 25th and will have a lot to live up to being a ranked Ivy squad. Our editors debate what this means for Penn and the Ivy League:



Three up, three down: Penn volleyball vs. Princeton

Having won three of its last five matches — including its most recent contest against a strong Dartmouth squad — it looks like Penn volleyball’s young roster may be finding its footing. On Friday, the Quakers will hit the road to take on Ivy-rival Princeton and get back to .500 in conference play. Let’s look at some reasons why the Red and Blue may extend their recent success and some reasons why they may revert to old tendencies.
