Guest Column by Zach Rissman | It's time to divest

(09/19/18 4:50am)

On April 5, 2010, an explosion ripped through the Upper Big Branch coal mine in Raleigh County, W. Va., killing 29 out of the 31 miners on site. This explosion was only one in a seemingly endless string of mine disasters in Appalachia, and the fifth fatal mine explosion in the United States in the previous decade. The blast occurred due to a buildup of coal dust and methane gas in the mine shafts — conditions that could have been prevented were the adequate ventilation systems in place.

Guest Column by Zach Rissman | The People’s Climate Movement and why it’s more about the “people” than the “climate”

(04/24/17 2:11am)

On April 29, as part of the People’s Climate Movement, over 100,000 people will gather to march in Washington D.C. to demonstrate widespread and overwhelming support for immediate and drastic climate action. Participants will hail from across the country and around the world, traveling hundreds or thousands of miles to participate in this historic march. To end the march, this incredible mass of people will surround the White House and call on our president and government to take action now. But what are these people really fighting for? What is motivating so many people to join this movement for climate action and justice? Spoiler alert: It’s probably not just to save the polar bears.

Guest Column by Zach Rissman | Behind closed doors: Sit-in negotiations and Penn’s blatant hypocrisy

The University of Pennsylvania, claiming to value collaboration and logic, acted extremely hypocritically throughout the negotiations during the Fossil Free Penn sit-in. On Monday, March 27th, students began sitting in College Hall demanding immediate divestment from coal and tar sands companies and the initiation of a plan for full divestment within the next six months. Throughout the next four days, members of Fossil Free Penn met with three administrators consistently: Gregory Rost, Joann Mitchell and Hikaru Kozuma. In these meetings, I began to understand the deep hypocrisy that Penn exhibits and its lack of true regard for student opinion or input.

Guest column by Rita Wegner and Zach Rissman | The pope's ecology message

(09/24/15 5:18am)

The pope is coming to Philadelphia this weekend. Some may opt to hide from the crowds inside the corner of their dorm room. Some may find their way downtown amidst the chaos for an unforgettable Snapchat story. And for some, the arrival of one of today’s most prominent public figures in Philadelphia serves as an inspiration.
