In my first weeks at Penn, I learned that ‘nutgraf’ is a term journalists use for the sentence that summarizes a story and explains why it matters. The nutgraf of an article about me might read: Samantha Sharf is graduating from college this week, next she plans to pursue a career in journalism.

In college, we’re trained to deal with big ideas and tough questions. But sometimes, the simplest lessons are key.

Louis Vuitton’s brown and tan leather motif is not a stranger to Penn’s campus. It makes appearances on wallets, key chains and the occasional handbag.

I decided to leave my scarf on as I walked into a meeting of “Rekindle Reason: Atheists, Agnostics and Freethinkers at UPenn” this Sunday. This was so those around me could not see the tiny gold hamsa, or hand of God, I wear around my neck.

This column in print* is written in News 706. The headline above it? Utopia. These fonts — released in 1960 and 1989, respectively — are commonly used in the print industry for their legibility and flexible spacing.

Growing up, my dad often expressed frustration over my frequent use of the word “love.” Dropping off a playmate, I would shout “love you” before the car door slammed and she ran into her house. A quiet dispute would ensue.

Photographer Zoe Strauss’ Philadelphia is not full of historical architecture, green lawns or familiar faces on Locust Walk. It is made up of mattress-strewn streets, tattooed bodies and a mysterious sign exclaiming, “EVERYTHING IS NOT $1.00”.

“Guys, guys, guys, guys!” shouts Ted as he approaches his friends, Marshall and Lily, at a fancy cocktail party. Behind him walks a man with a sly smile, a receding hairline and a full mustache.

When scanning through photos of myself on Facebook (don’t judge — you do it too), it can be hard to resist the urge to open up Photoshop. The popular software allows anyone with a computer to enhance digital images with relative ease. Such changes can be as simple as adding light to a photo that was shot in a dark room or as drastic as taking years off someone’s face.

This Thanksgiving season, I ate myself into food euphoria, and it was glorious. My turkey and brussels sprouts, however, came with a side of reality. The unwanted dish sat among the feast like the watery spinach no one really wanted to eat but couldn’t avoid (you would hate to offend the chef, and spinach is good for you).

I have been riveted by the Penn State sexual abuse scandal since riots broke out on the university’s State College campus last week. My interest has been part that of a college-news junky and part that of a voyeur who can’t keep her eyes off a train wreck. But for a while, I viewed the events as tragic and other — not concerned with my life beyond Facebook newsfeed updates from my few acquaintances that attend the school.

I begin this column in the reading room of the Fisher Fine Arts Library. As I write, a large group of visitors wanders into the space and looks up, their eyes wide and mouths ajar as they examine architect Frank Furness’ stunning design.

It is nearing 5:30 p.m. on Friday — an hour after United States House of Representatives Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) was scheduled to speak in Huntsman Hall. A small group remains gathered outside the Wharton School building debating health care.

When I began writing for The Daily Pennsylvanian in fall 2008, the worst thing you could have told me was that my story would be running online only. Editors tried to sell the placement as no big deal, but there was something thrilling about seeing the words “By Samantha Sharf” on dusty gray newsprint and getting ink on my hands. I was sure this feeling could not be replicated in front of a computer screen.
