This past year, we were excited to lead a campus that was named the best college nationwide by USA Today and, of course, No. 1 Party School by Playboy Magazine. Being good student advocates, we’d like to take credit for that. We can’t, of course. In reality, our role is much more quiet, and our best work is much more slow.

If you’re a new student on campus, welcome to Penn! If you’re a returning upperclassman, welcome back! We hope the first few days of classes have been great for everyone. As everyone gets ready for the new school year, we can’t wait to continue and put into practice the projects the UA has been working on over the summer.

Penn is full of noteworthy initiatives. But we would like to
highlight one in particular: Penn Dining and Bon Appetit’s efforts to work with
students to implement a food recovery program.

W hat does the UA do? The UA has three charges: funding, services and advocacy. We allocate a $2.1 million budget, run airport shuttles, legal and online services and advocate for student and student group issues to improve campus life for undergraduates.

You’re at a BYO with some of your friends. You look up at some point and realize that almost everyone is on their phone at the same time texting, Facebooking, Twittering, Instagramming, Snapchatting, emailing. It’s not the whole time, but at some point one person pulls out their phone, there’s a slight lull in the conversation, the next person pulls out their phone and pretty soon everyone has a white glow on their face. You’re still hanging out, but no one’s completely there.

I don’t know about you, but Philadelphia’s location was not one of the reasons I chose Penn. When I told my friends back in Texas that I was going to school in Philadelphia, I got a lot of funny looks.
