Report: Consulting Club Interviews Indistinguishable From A Capella Auditions

Multiple sources tell UTB that they understood the application process for consulting or finance clubs to be so demanding that they were unfazed when asked to do things with no clear connection to the club— and ended up in groups completely unrelated to business. Here is one freshman's story.

Jacob Welt (W ‘21) was willing to do whatever it took to get into 180 Degrees Consulting. He had heard stories about the tedious and competitive application process, from which so few people emerge victorious. So when he was asked to sing a scale at his interview, he wasn’t all that surprised.

“There’s a lot of qualified students at Wharton with a lot of experience, so the people conducting these interviews have got to find some way to distinguish between applicants with very similar resumes,” Welt told us. “Who am I to say that testing vocal talent is the wrong way to go about it?”

After the ‘interview’, he was told that he’d be hearing from the club shortly. It was not until Welt received an email welcoming him to the Shabbatones that he realized his mistake.

“At first I was super disappointed that I missed the interview for 180 Degrees Consulting. But then I was like, I never thought I could get into an A Capella group!”

Jacob told UTB that he plans to stick with the Shabbatones, noting that the group will add to the breadth of his resume. Welt said, “I’m not even Jewish, but I think this could be fun.”

Mazel tov, Jacob.
