Penn to host NCWA All-Star Classic for top wrestlers

The Palestra may be affectionately referred to as the “Cathedral of College Basketball,” but another sport has been able to pin down the historic location for at least one weekend this year.

Penn will play host to the NWCA All-Star Classic – a preseason showcase for the most accomplished collegiate wrestlers in the nation – on Nov. 1 in its historic sports venue.

The Atlanta Chapter of the Wrestlers in Business Network – along with the national organization – will sponsor the weekend-long event, which also includes a Youth All-Star Meet and other various activities.

It will be the third time the event has come through Philadelphia and the first since 1991.

The news also continues the recent trend of change for Penn’s wrestling program, which hired new coach Alex Tirapelle over the offseason.

The participating athletes will be announced in the weeks leading up to the event. We will see if any of Penn’s grapplers – like 2013-14 All-American Lorenzo Thomas – are selected to compete.
