If a college mishandles sexual assault in the future, the federal government may come cracking down.

A group of senators proposed legislation last week that would raise fines on colleges that mishandle sexual assault accusations while also implementing more requirement for transparency. The act is called the Campus Accountability and Safety Act

According to a Huffington Post article, the law could increase fines from $35,000 to $150,000 while requiring that schools conduct surveys to have a greater understanding of the sexual assault picture on campus. There would also be more requirements in terms of reporting numbers on sexual assault.

"The reason why schools are failing is because they do not take this crime seriously," Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, co-sponsor of the bill, said during a press conference Thursday. For the full story, check out the Huffington Post.
