Wright State University in Ohio is apologizing for what students call an "offensive and disrespectful" menu in honor of Black History Month that included fried chicken and collard greens.

Chartwells Higher Education Dining Service, the dining provider for the university, explained that its goal is to "celebrate national events on campus with authentic and traditional cuisine … In no way was the promotion associated with Black History Month meant to be insensitive."

Wright State's vice president of multicultural affairs and community engagement Kimberly Barrett explained that though people have good intentions in trying to respect diversity, "people who might be in the majority community, or in communities other than the ethnic group they're trying to honor, sometimes get it wrong."

The menu, which was displayed on dining hall screens, has since been removed.
