Through various government- and school- specific programs catering to students living in the country illegally, the U.S. is seeing the benefits of granting these students access to higher education.
A report by the UndocuScholars Project and the UCLA institute finds that these students are majoring in fields that are important to the nation and in which there are shortages of employees. According to the study, 28.2 percent of students living here illegally are majoring in the STEM field, an area that is quickly gaining importance.
The study also found that these students had higher GPAs than the average U.S. undergraduate population.
