Researchers at Penn Medicine may have discovered the first new general anesthetics in over 40 years.

Roderic G. Eckenhoff, vice chair for Research at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, led the group of researchers that found two new compounds of a new class of anesthetics. However, Eckenhoff says that the anesthetics aren't ready for more than further testing at this point and that the discovery "provides a new approach to identifying novel anesthetics"

"Our goal was to identify compounds with high potency, but low toxicity” Eckenhoff said to newswise. “But we are a long way from getting these drugs into people."
