Ben Nelson wants to revolutionize the way college works.

Inspired by his work in the technology sector, Nelson, a Penn graduate, has created a new kind of university called the Minerva Project. Minerva combines traditional aspects of college — like residential living and seminars — with modern, technology driven forms of education, such as online courses. The new university will also require students to spend each semester in a different country.

The idea for Minerva came from Nelson's dissatisfaction with the way colleges and universities currently operate. "Most universities say,'Read these dead white men and you'll know what to do with your life.' That's very strange and anachronistic," Nelson said.

Though it is unclear whether or not Minerva will take off, Nelson is hopeful it will. "In education, all reform is top down. And if we can force the Ivies to change, every university changes," Nelson said.
