Media’s changing — Amazon’s CEO bought the Washington Post, AOL’s Patch is all but a failed project and the line between advertising and journalism blurs more than Robin Thicke can sing about — and this community paper’s changing along with it. Read on for a few of the updates we’ve made for this fall.

First, we’ll be bringing you the news as close to real time as possible. Inside the newsroom, we’ve switched to a day-through-night on-duty schedule, meaning there’s a team of reporters and editors on it all the time. The goal is to get you the answer the moment you see that, “Hey, is it me or is Van Pelt on fire?” Facebook post.

You’ll also want to download the DP app on your phone. It’ll show you food and shopping discounts every now and then. But mostly, it’s an easy way to get 34th Street, the DP and Under the Button all in one place. We’ll be updating the layout you see weekly, so it’s easy to know what the big thing on campus is, be it the Penn-Princeton football game or Mask & Wig’s first fall show.

Finally, be on the lookout for a new Events@Penn calendar. One of the most common emails we get are about getting the word out for all the shows and events your groups put on. Thanks to the folks at PennApps Labs, who worked with us to build a user-friendly events calendar, you’ll have one more channel to spread the news. If you’re into old-fashioned print, page two of our daily paper will feature UTB’s Locust Flaikus and event previews all week long.

We bring you the news you care about, the news you should know and the news you otherwise would have never known. For the journalism enthusiasts, the DP is a place for you to practice all of that. We do all of this in hopes of creating a platform for dialogue that offers more structure than a seconds-long “hi” on Locust Walk and more freedom than a classroom discussion.

The point of that dialogue is to hear from you. So pick us up and let us know what you think.
