Each spring, the Nominations & Elections Committee appoints student representatives of misrepresented and underrepresented groups to the University Council, a deliberative forum where University policies are initiated, discussed and prepped for implementation.

President Amy Gutmann and Provost Vincent Price, along with other members of the administration, faculty and staff, sit alongside undergraduate and graduate representatives at monthly UC meetings.

UC provides misrepresented and underrepresented groups unparalleled access to administrators along with a forum to voice their concerns on behalf of all of their constituents. This year, the NEC will appoint nine seats to University Council.

But what does diversity mean and how does it impact us as a student body? On UC, it can encompass everything from race and gender to culture, sexual orientation, political opinions and more. We, as Penn students, have the power to channel our differing perspectives towards creating tangible change.

While sitting on UC is only one example of the many ways our differences can unite us in the common goal of improving the lives of those around us, it can be an incredible tool in the process. Past seat holders reflect this — they have included groups ranging from UMOJA to Lambda to Penn Consortium of Undergraduate Women to Panhel. Previous topics of UC have included faith-based initiatives on campus, Penn’s relationship with the West Philadelphia community, medical costs and coverage for transgender health benefits and the University’s financial aid policies. Controversial and extremely important topics are being discussed with top University officials, and you have a chance to get a say!

To apply to sit on University Council, visit the NEC website to learn more about UC and access the application. Completed applications must be submitted by tomorrow at 11:59 p.m. Selected applicants will be contacted for interviews, which will take place Feb. 22 to 23.

This is your chance to get your voice heard. Don’t miss out.
