The men’s golf team came out flat at the Coca-Cola Intercollegiate this weekend.

The two-day, 54-hole event took place in south Georgia on Friday and Saturday — each golfer played 36 on Friday and the final 18 on Saturday.

In a field consisting of mainly Division-III teams, the Red and Blue (308-317-307—932) came up just three shots short of the eventual winner, Greensboro College (311-308-310—929).

The tournament took place at Hunter Golf Club, on a military base in Savannah, Ga. The blustery conditions and the sandy, muddy rough may have affected the Quakers, according to coach Scott Allen.

“We didn’t respond as well to the conditions as we would have liked,” Allen said.

Also, the Quakers were without one of their best players — freshman Max Marsico went home to nurse a back injury.

However, the Quakers did welcome back a familiar face, defending Ivy League individual champion Scotty Williams.

Williams, a junior, placed second overall, carding a 75-78-75—228, behind Ohio Wesleyan’s Nate Fridley, 74-75-77—226.

Williams was abroad in South Africa for the fall semester and missed the fall season, so this was his first action since last spring.

Sophomore PJ Fielding tied for fourth overall with a 78-79-74—231.

Allen didn’t think that his players played to their fullest potential.

“We played decently but not our best, so we are looking forward to the upcoming tournament this weekend,” Allen said.

All in all, it was a solid start to the spring season for the Quakers. And with one of the best players in the Ivy League returning, Penn will definitely be a team to be reckoned with as the season progresses.
