A 20-year-old resident of Yardley, Pa., died early Wednesday morning after a fatal injury at the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity house on Dec. 31, according to University spokeswoman Phyllis Holtzman.
Matthew Crozier — who is not a Penn student, Holtzman said — attended a New Year’s Eve party at Phi Kappa Sigma, also known as “Skulls,” located at 3539 Locust Walk. He was “fatally injured as a result of a fall within the house,” Holtzman explained. Crozier was then admitted into the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He died at HUP “in the early hours,” Holtzman added.
According to the Philadelphia Daily News, Crozier fell 30 feet in a stairway between the first and second floors of the house and suffered severe head trauma.
“The incident occurred during winter break, when the University is officially closed,” she said. “The University is currently investigating the matter.”
“Phi Kappa Sigma is a privately owned house,” Holtzman added.
According to the Daily News, alcohol was served at the party, but it is unclear yet whether it had anything to do with the fall. Crozier was a graduate of La Salle College High School in Glenside, Pa. and attended John Carroll University.
“This is an absolute tragedy, and our prayers go out to his family and friends,” Holtzman said.
