College sophomore Michael Levenstein resigned late Monday afternoon from his position as an Undergraduate Assembly College representative.

“Essentially, owing to several additional academic and extracurricular responsibilities, I found that maintaining my seat on the UA would be deleterious to the overall functioning of the body insofar as it would be extremely unlikely that I would be able to dedicate the appropriate amounts of time and effort the students who elected me deserve,” he wrote in an e-mail.

“While I very much would have liked to remain on the body, I feel that these other interests of mine prove inescapably pressing, and thus must be treated with due respect,” he continued. “Since I feel much the same regarding the UA and its work, I would far rather be replaced.”

This marks the first UA resignation under College senior Matt Amalfitano’s leadership.

College sophomore Alex Amaniel, who received the next highest number of votes in the spring UA elections, initially agreed to serve as his replacement.

However, he retracted the decision Tuesday morning and requested more time to decide. Amaniel told UA speaker G.J. Melendez-Torres, a Wharton and Nursing senior, he felt it best that he consider his other commitments before immediately accepting the UA seat.

“I have plenty of respect for Alex’s judgment and character, and I’m sure that he’ll come to a decision both promptly and in the best interests of the UA and his own commitments,” Melendez-Torres wrote in an e-mail.

A decision from Amaniel is expected in the next few days. If he declines the seat, another replacement will be chosen based on voting numbers from the race last spring.
