Trustees mourn loss of vice chairman

Mickey Tarnopol, vice chairman of the University Board of Trustees and a 1958 Wharton graduate, died Monday night after a long illness.

According to a statement released by University President Amy Gutmann and Board of Trustees Chairman Jim Riepe, Tarnopol was a member of four trustee committees at the time of his death and in recent years had focused extensively on planning Penn's next capital campaign.

Tarnopol was vice chairman of securities firm Bear Stearns, where he had worked for 30 years. In 1996 he was awarded the American Jewish Committee's Herbert H. Lehman Award.

"We find it hard to imagine a meeting of the trustees, or indeed any major Penn event, without Mickey," the statement said. "His loyalty and devotion to Penn have enriched the University for over 30 years. His commitment of time and energy to Penn will benefit students and faculty for generations to come."

Tarnopol is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lynne, and two daughters, Lori and Lisa. All are graduates of the University.
